NAMI Walk

Kiwanis Clubs from around the Quad City area are putting together walk teams and gathering pledges in support of the 4th Annual NAMI Scott County Walk which will take place on Saturday, May 5th in Credit Island Park, Davenport.

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness and their families.

Kiwanis, in keeping with its major emphasis on Young Children: Priority One, will be walking this year specifically on behalf of children with mental illness or children living with parents, guardians, or siblings who have mental illnesses. It is the goal of the Kiwanis Quad Cities Team to produce 80 walkers and to raise $2550 by May 5, 2007. Kiwanis has proudly supported the NAMI Walks for the Mind of America fundraising and mental health awareness program since it was introduced into the Quad Cities by the NAMI Scott County local affiliate in May 2003.

The Kiwanis Quad Cities Walk Team is co-captained by Liz Berridge from the Rock Island Noon Kiwanis Club and by Sherri Maynard from the East Moline-Silvis Kiwanis Club. Other local participating clubs are: Bettendorf (Bev Ricketts, Captain); Davenport Noon (Dena Reeves, Captain); Davenport Northside (Debbie Barnhart, Captain); Moline (Sue Swisher, Captain) and RI Golden K (Madlynne Nelson, Captain) and the St. Ambrose University Circle K (Leslie Schulte, Captain).

The Rock Island Noon Club has already surpassed its individual team goal of 10 walkers and $550 in donations. There are currently 12 walkers who have collected $633.00 to date.

Individuals wishing to join the Kiwanis Walk Team or make a pledge can go to www.nami.org and click on the NAMI Walk logo.

The Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation
On Sunday, March 11th, the Rock Island Noon Kiwanis will be joining clubs from around Division 17 in a Bowl-A-Thon to benefit The Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation. The Foundation, known as the Kiwanis Illinois-Eastern Iowa District’s Finest Project, was developed in 1952 in cooperation with Dr. Louis Amador and has raised in excess of 4 million dollars to support basic research grants.

This year’s Division 17 Bowl-A-Thon will take place at Lee’s Lanes at 925 South Oakwood Avenue in Geneseo Illinois (Home of Lt. Governor Tony Simon). Bowling will commence at 1:30 p.m. A team comprised of Liz Berridge, Dick Fislar, Paul Lamoureux, Duane Lohse and Mitch Pannell will represent the RI Noon Club. Our bowlers will be collecting pledges until the morning of the event. The Foundation is a 501c3 so all contributions are tax deductible…just request a receipt. For more information, please contact Liz Berridge at BerridgeElizabethB@sau.edu or 563-333-6271 (day) 309-786-4260 (evening).

K-Kids

K-Kids is the youngest and fastest growing service organization for elementary students worldwide. These clubs are ideally suited for students in grades 1 through 5 (ages 6 to 12).

K-Kids is a "student-led" community-service organization, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body.

K-Kids clubs can also be established in a community-based organization. Such organizations might include, but are not limited to: community library, Boys Club, Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, or a church.

K-Kids is unique because it's sponsored by a local Kiwanis club, composed of leading business and professional people of the community.
