April 7, 2008 Meeting

OPENING ACT

President Steve Schroeder called the meeting to order. Music was once again provided by Jonathan Turner with his Kiwanis Sinfonia.

John Califf reminded us of the next Interclub Group Tour to Geneseo, Tuesday evening, April 22.

Yes, those were snow flurries you saw this morning, but Gene Smith says it is time to get your early bids in with Birdies for Charity. You might as well make your pledge early because, remember, he knows where you live and where you eat Mondays at noon.

Flushed with joy after her recent marriage, Liz Berridge informed us that Joe Beatty will now be chairing the NAMI Walk in her absence.

Denise Ormsby gave her last pitch for Rose Day. Be a star and pop for a dozen.

A second reading was given of the nominees for officer positions.

President Steve reminded us of the Rock Island Clean-up Day to be held April 19, followed by the First Annual Kiwanis Jazz Extravaganza that same date and the following day, April 20. I heard there is no truth to the rumor that everything picked up on Rock Island Clean-up Day was fair game for the Christmas Bad Gift Exchange.

We welcomed a new member in our midst, Jeff Behrens.

Mike Bell informed us that Peanut Days will be held May 9 and 10, and I am sure many of you recall Peanut Days as one of the most enjoyable activities in which our club engages. Sign up for a shift and if you can do more, go for it. If properly urged, rumor has it that Al Beck, Joe Robb, Father Mirabelli, and Mike Swartz will do what they can to ensure good weather.

Guests included representatives of the Alleman High School and Rock Island High School Key Clubs. Despite his best efforts, Father Mirabelli apparently has not been able to reach all Key Clubbers who come to the meeting with the admonition about sitting at the Duncan Reid table.

In Fun and Fellowship, Mike Swartz won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the club. The Kartel won the opportunity for the grand prize, which managed to elude the grasp of Duncan Reid.
