February  18, 2008 Meeting

OPENING ACT

Word had it that President Steve was waiting out snow drifts in Ames, Iowa, so Adam Bain was again called to fill the breach. Jonathan Turner was not able to attend, so the Daryl Empen Singers filled in for him.

Among the announcements, John Califf reminded us of an Interclub next Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Annawan. If you would like to attend and not have to drive, call John or, if he is in the mood, Google him.

Dick Fislar took the floor on two items. First, he asked us to complete the information sheets which he will be using for the purpose of putting out the first Club contact directory in three years. He also reminded us of the March 19 social with Rotary at Circa 21.

Liz Berridge reported on the Division bowling outing Sunday, and it sounds like the Kiwanis Keglers performed admirably.

Guests included Heath Treharne’s son, who informed the Club members at their table that Heath apparently relies heavily on his son to coach him on his "what day is it" segment of Happy/Sad Dollars.

In Happy/Sad Dollars, Liz again took the floor to give us an early reminder of the NAMI walk on May 3. We were also informed that Dale Grabau has recently been making use of the expertise of local cardiologists and is looking to be back in the saddle in time for spring training season when the Yankees are transported down to Florida in Brinks trucks.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel not only won the preliminary prize, but thanks to the astute judgment of Don Massey, also won the grand prize.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

The program was given by Angela Richardson of Community Caring Conference. Angela discussed the Grow Your Own Teachers program, an Illinois initiative of a partnership by the name of Grow Your Own Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education. The initiative is designed to create a pipeline of highly-qualified teachers of color to acquire and maintain jobs in hard-to-fill positions in low income and hard-to-staff schools. The program is designed for applicants with a high school diploma or GED, United States citizens or permanent legal residents, and paraprofessionals, school aides or parent community members active in local schools. One of the more enticing features of this program is that tuition is entirely covered by a loan which is forgiven once the Grow Your Own Teacher candidate, when certified, teaches for at least five years in a high-need public school. In addition, child care and tutoring are provided free of charge.
