Rock Island Kiwanis Club
OPENING ACT President Steve Schroder called the meeting to order and began the business portion of the meeting with a number of announcements.First, he reminded us that statements were in the process of being distributed among the Club members in attendance. Al Beck reminded the gathering of the Interclub scheduled for Monday night with the East Moline/Silvis Club. Dick Fislar informed the Club that another Circa 21 night with Rotary has been scheduled. The date is February 6 and the program is the Buddy Holly Story. Liz reminded us of the Bowl-A-Thon to be held Sunday, February 17 at noon at the Town & Country bowling alley. Extending our calendars out a bit, Denise Ormsby informed us that Rose Day would be held April 23. While this wont correspond with Mothers Day, Sweetest Day, Easter or any other Hallmark occasion that I know of, it appears that it should be a good day for the Club to make some money. Guests included representatives of the Rock Island High School and Alleman High School Key Clubs, Rock Island High School Principal, Nate Anderson, and longtime Moline Club member, former Lieutenant Governor and about the closest thing we have to Mr. Kiwanis in the Illinois Quad Cities, Mel Peterson. In Fun and Fellowship, Mike Swartz won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club. The Kartel won the opportunity for the grand prize and wiley Lee Schenck managed to win back at least part of the Kartels investment.
THE FEATURE ATTRACTION The program was given by Dan Osterman of the Two Rivers YMCA. Dan gave an overview of the Ys mission of serving spirit, mind and body. The Y also stands for strengthening families and wellness for all, the latter being a program which has attained greater emphasis in view of the challenges of growing American obesity, particularly among children. Dan explained that the Two Rivers Y is one of a select group of facilities picked by CDC to specifically work in the area of decreasing obesity and growing healthier ways to live.FUTURE ATTRACTIONS Jan. 21 Sister Bobbi Bussan, St. Joseph the Worker House in Rock Island Jan. 28 Dr. Ken Colwell, Director, Ambrose Communication Center Feb. 25 Sister Joan Lescinski, President, St. Ambrose UniversityTHOUGHT FOR THE DAY Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family.
