January 21, 2008 Meeting

OPENING ACT

President Steve Schroder called the meeting to order. The group was compelled to sing a capella due to the absence pf our pianist, Jonathan Turner, and his Rock Island Kiwanis Chorale.

Steve reported that a successful Interclub was held with the East Moline/Silvis Club at Illini Hospital and that no experimental surgeries were found necessary.

Dick Fislar reminded us of our annual social with Rotary at Circa 21 on February 6. In case you, like member Heath Treharne, might raise the question of "what day is it?", my calendar indicates that this date is also known by some as Ash Wednesday. If you are interested, please call Dick.

Liz reminded us of the Bowl-A-Thon February 17, explaining that to put things simply, the Club needs bowlers and wants money. If you are leery of hosing down your bowling shoes with that tough-actin’ Tinactin, please support the Club by signing up a pledge.

Steve happily reported that Michele Youngquist and her husband welcomed a baby girl to their family.

Guests included children of Bill Nelson and Heath Treharne.

The Club was reminded of a wine tasting and silent auction February 8 and putt-putt golf tournament February 9 at Oakwood. Receipts will go to the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In Fun and Fellowship, Rod won the preliminary prize, which he donated to Salvation Army. The opportunity for the grand prize went to Joe Robb, who managed to beat a beleaguered President Steve for the money.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

The program was given by Sister Roberta Bussan. Sister Roberta gave her presentation in her capacity as President of the Board of St. Joseph the Worker House at 901 – 20th Street, Rock Island. She explained that the facility is community-based housing for the poor, providing transitional housing for women and children. Residents average approximately three months for their stay. Sister Roberta expressed her appreciation for financial assistance which had been received from Royal Neighbors and Heidi Huiskamp at Blackhawk Bank & Trust, as well as Rebuilding Together. Sister Roberta also explained that it is no longer a politically-active endeavor.
