January 7, 2008 Meeting

Mayor Mark Schwiebert.jpg (222635 bytes)

OPENING ACT

President Steve Schroder called our first meeting of year 2008 to order. This was a joint meeting with Rotary.

Al Beck announced that our next Interclub will be next Monday night, January 14, with the East Moline/Silvis Club. Please contact Al if you’d be interested.

President Steve also brought to the group’s attention the retirement of Club member, Joe Beatty, from the Circuit Court bench and remarked about the kind article about this in The Dispatch/Argus.

President Steve also gave first call on our District Bowl-A-Thon to be held February 17. It’s not too early to give a Tinactin jolt to those bowling shoes and shake the weevils out of your favorite polyester bowling shirt.

We were reminded that the Expo Center would be featuring a farm show next week, so if you don’t want to find yourself double parking in the cattle pen, follow the parking guides next week to our designated areas.

President Steve also announced an exciting and memorable joint project being undertaken with the Rotary Club. Rock Island Girls Softball is in need of a portable scoreboard to go along with its new field, and our two Clubs are making a joint contribution toward this purchase.

In Fun and Fellowship, Denise Ormsby won the preliminary prize, which she graciously donated back to the Club. Joe Robb won the opportunity to try to outfox the wiley Mike Bell and, true to form, Mike won.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

For the 19th year, our presentation was given by our own Club member, Mayor Mark Schwiebert. His well-detailed and organized presentation began with a summarization of capital improvements and projects in the city, going on to recognitions received by the city, followed by challenges looking to the future. Examples included the Jumer’s project in southwest Rock Island, riverfront development both downtown and in the Columbia Park neighborhood, the Armory project, and the Rock River bridge, sometimes referred to as the Viola Expressway.
