OPENING ACT President Steve Schroder called the meeting to order. Music was provided by Jonathan Turner and his Kiwanis Klezmer Khorus.Lee Schenck provided the first reading of the report of the Nominating Committee. Nominees include Denise Ormsby for President; Adam Bain for First Vice President; Craig Knobloch for Second Vice President; Steve Schroder as Immediate Past President; Mike Bell as Secretary; Daryl Empen as Treasurer; Tom Hanson, Tom Ketelaar and Cathy Rochau for three-year terms on the Board; Marla Andich, Al Beck and Heath Treharne for two more years on the Board; and Joe Robb, Tom Stontz, and Dave Umphrey for one more year on the Board.
John Califf gave a presentation to the membership on the formation of a committee to serve as a screening committee on requests for contributions. Lieutenant Governor Jim Abbitt was a welcome guest, and he gave us some initial information concerning a First Annual Kiwanis Invitational Community Jazz Festival to be held Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20 at Rock Island High School auditorium. Presenting hosts on Saturday would be the Rock Island and Bettendorf High School jazz programs, and on Sunday, the Moline and Pleasant Valley High School jazz programs. Well-known local talent, Neil Smith, would be the guest artist on Saturday, and renowned local musician, Dave Holcomb, would serve as guest artist on Sunday. Jim dropped off a number of tickets for this event, and it should be spectacular. In the Fun and Fellowship area, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, which earned its membership $7 for its $9 investment. The Kartel also won the right to go for the grand prize and, on behalf of the Kartel, Harold Campbell lost on the grand prize. Mike Bell did manage to bring tears of joy to the faces of both Harold and fellow Kartel member, Lee Schenck, with American Bank umbrellas.
THE FEATURE ATTRACTION Bruce Carter supplemented a slide presentation, giving us the year in review at the Quad City International Airport, as well as a look ahead. Projections for the future are exciting, ambitious, and consistent with the Airport Authoritys striving for excellence. Anticipated changes include a maintenance facility to be used by Northwest/Mesaba, additional parking and service areas for the car rental agencies, extended runways, expanded parking area, and a new taxiway.
