OPENING ACT

President Steve Schroder called the meeting to order. Jonathan Turner was unable to attend, so song leading and musical embellishments were handled by Daryl Empen and the Kiwanis Tabernacle Choir.

John Califf reported on the Interclub to be held this week. Your Editor offers sincere apologies for any errors concerning dates of meetings. Your best bet is probably to either make sure you attend a meeting or call John directly to confirm information on point.

Dave Umphrey made his first pitch for the Bethany for Children and Families Administrative Professionals Day luncheon to be held Friday, April 18 at Circa. I would imagine we will be getting ongoing reminders on this, but sign up early.

Denise Ormsby gave us the now-weekly pitch for Rose Day to be held Wednesday, April 23. Books of tickets are available and at the price of only $16 per dozen, you can be a star for very few dollars.

Happy and Sad Dollar collections recognized the usual assortment of anniversaries and life experiences.

A special recognition can be offered to Club member Jerry Jones, who was featured in a very fine article in the Sunday Argus/Dispatch.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

The program was given by the Education Department of the Rock Island Elks Club. Similar to Kiwanis International, the Rock Island Elks Education Department strives to serve youth, particularly underprivileged youth, from the Illinois and Iowa Quad Cities. This group’s mission is to broaden educational and personal growth opportunities for minority and at-risk students and their families. The Elks programs include an Experience the World Annual Youth Trip which, this year, features a trip to Disney World for 24 deserving youngsters selected by community leaders. The Elks also sponsors two different golf tournaments, a Unity Fest celebrating the rich and diverse characters of our communities, and a scholarship program. The scholarship programs provide at least three college scholarships to low-income Iowa and Illinois graduating high school seniors. The program has given away more than $50,000 in scholarships.
