OPENING ACT

Once again, First Vice President Steve Schroder ably filled in for our President, Dick Fislar, apparently still trying to find the softball complex.

On the subject of Interclubs, John Califf reminded us that on Tuesday, August 21 at noon at the Bettendorf Lodge, local Kiwanis Clubs will be holding the next annual Kiwanis Magnifico meeting.  The Club pays the tab, so let’s see if we can have a great turnout, an excellent meeting, a chance to chew the fat with fellow Kiwanians, and bring President Dick to tears when he gets the bill.

Plans are still in the works, but chairperson Dale Grabau was able to state with complete confidence that the annual Rock Island Labor Day parade will be held on Labor Day in Rock Island this year.

The II District Convention will be this weekend in Rockford, so don’t try to get hold of our Club officers.

We also got another reminder that next Monday, there will not be a formal program.  Rather, this will be an award day.  Those who have received Hixson recognition were asked to attend in full uniform.

Happy and Sad Dollars featured our weekly entertainment from Heath Treharne.  With his discussion of wiggling toes and smiling, I think the lesson to be learned is that if your nose runs and your feet smell, you are built upside down.  Liz announced that the new President at St. Ambrose University is apparently a nun.   I didn’t get the name, but Liz said something about a sister act, so it must be Whoopi Goldberg.  I would imagine that chapel will be a course in high demand in coming years.

In Fun and Fellowship, that laugh-a-minute Kartel group won the grand prize of $5 in return for its aggregate $6 investment.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

The program was presented by Melissa Gardner of the Quad City Flames Hockey and I Wireless Center.  Melissa explained that professional hockey in the Quad Cities will now be at the AAA or top developmental level in that over 80 percent of the players we’ll see in Moline will likely be getting called up to the NHL eventually.  Melissa also explained that the AHL has a very community-oriented philosophy and that we can expect the players to be very visible in the community and see a considerable financial investment in the community, both by the club and by the players.  A new feature this year will be a youth ticket drive intended to expand on the family-oriented focus of the new ownership.unable to report on the details.

President Dick would like to invite all to a party at his home at 2210 – 30th Street on Sunday, August 19 from noon to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate his birthday, his wife’s birthday, and his sister-in-law’s birthday.  RSVP’s are appreciated and no gifts, please!
