OPENING ACT President Steve Schroder called the meeting to order. Lee Schenck led us in some appropriately festive holiday music.Gene Smith presented the Club with checks totaling $3,153.93 attributable to Birdies for Charity. Gene is to be commended for his hard work and tenacity in pursuing this very valuable Club activity, and Club members are to be commended for their generosity.
Dave Umphrey reported that Salvation Army bells rang out Friday, but Saturday was an opportunity frozen out by the weather. He also reported that Project Santa has 20-odd or so people signed up to assist at St. Anthonys. With the writers strike over, Liz Berridge said she would handle the songwriting issues.
Michele Youngquist reported on Coats for Kids. We were also reminded that the purchases for the King Center holiday party would be conducted starting at 8:00 a.m. Thursday at the Moline Wal-Mart. Gift wrapping will commence Saturday at 9:00 and the party will be next Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:30. President Steve also had the happy duty of handling donations to a variety of beneficiaries of our fundraising activities. Frances Willard Elementary School of Rock Island received $50, Teen Parents Center received $1,400, the Medal of Honor Banquet for Rock Island Schools received $200, and Transitions received $700.
Guests included representatives of the Alleman High School and Rock Island High School Key Clubs, as well as Dr. Nate Anderson, Rock Island High School Principal. In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary drawing of $7 to help recoup the $9 in ticket purchases. Jud Briggs managed to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory for the grand prize.
THE FEATURE ATTRACTION The program was given by new Club member, Sharon Towner, from the Optional Education Program at Black Hawk College. Approximately 1,300 students have received their high school diplomas since the program started 22 years ago, and 1,400 more have received their GEDs. The program serves a population of individuals 16 through 21 from six high schools: Rock Island, Moline, UTHS, Sherrard, Rockridge, and Riverdale. Students participate in this alternative program for a variety of reasons, usually, under circumstances in which this is their last chance to turn things around. Funding for the program comes largely from the Illinois State Board of Education and Black Hawk College, although grants are received from, among other parties, our Kiwanis Club.FUTURE ATTRACTIONS Dec. 17 Bad Gift Exchange Dec. 24 & 31 No meeting THOUGHT FOR THE DAY "Im just keeping a low profile." - Dick Fislar
