Rock Island Kiwanis Club
OPENING ACT President Steve Schroder presided over our last Club meeting of 2007. Lee Schenck did double duty on giving the invocation and leading us in some festive holiday songs, accompanied by our own TransKiwanian Orchestra.As a reminder, our next meeting will not be until January 7, which will be our annual joint meeting with Rotary to hear the State of the City Address by our own Mark Schwiebert, Mayor of the City of Rock Island. John Califf gave us a final reminder of the Interclub with the Davenport Club on December 20 at the Outing Club. Get your Metrolink round-trip tickets early.
We were pleased to see longtime member Milt Hedquist in our midst again. Tom Plechaty gave an announcement concerning the cheese sale. Apparently, there is still one order that hasn’t been picked up by whomever bought it. Tom didn’t want to cause any alarm but mentioned that until it is picked up, it will be getting fully aged on the dashboard of his car. Dale Blocklinger also fulfilled an annual custom by bringing his grandson to the meeting. This time, he played it safe and kept him away from the Dave Umphrey table. In Fun and Fellowship, Don Massey won the preliminary prize for the Kartel, managing to win $6 on the Kartel’s $9 investment. The Kartel also won the right to the grand prize but Gary Miner wasn’t able to add to the Kartel’s winnings. The Club gave its very grateful holiday bonus to the Bridges family of Evie, Mark and Bill. THE FEATURE ATTRACTION
In lieu of the program, Santa (who bore a striking resemblance to Rod Jennings) showed up with his festive elf to preside over the Bad Gift Exchange.
