July 30, 2007 Meeting

OPENING ACT

President Dick Fislar led our meeting.  Those of us who share a cappella shortcomings were especially pleased to welcome back Jonathan Turner and the Kiwanis Bix Shoe-Stomp Orchestra.

Amidst great wailing and gnashing of teeth, President Dick announced that he would not be present next week.

Dick informed us that August 13 would be a special meeting in that instead of the presentation of an organized program, the day would be devoted to the presentation of awards to various Club members.

Dick also made his initial solicitation for marchers for the Labor Day parade.

John Califf again reminded us of the August 22 Meeting Gigantico at The Lodge in Bettendorf.  Again, this will be a joint meeting of all the Quad Cities’ Kiwanis Clubs.  Attendance is made even more enticing by the fact that the Club will be paying the cost of all Club members who wish to attend.

Dick was a premier benefactor of Happy and Sad Dollars.  First, Dick mentioned that he had cut eight minutes off his time from last year.  Rumor has it that the always-wiley Dick did the Rosie Ruiz thing, running only to the halfway point of the race and getting a ride back to the finish line in the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile.  Dick also announced something about a party on August 19, although he didn’t share with us either the time or location.

In Fun and Fellowship, Alicia graciously returned the preliminary prize, while Mark Amacher won back some hard-earned investment dollars for the Kartel.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

Our program presenter, Steve Ketelaar, gave a fascinating presentation on his work and workplace philosophy.  He suggested that while his skills and talent can make for a very entertaining radio presence, he sees his position as being more of an observer.  He presented a number of humorous vignettes, shared some of his extensive experiences with well-known entertainers on his shows, and related a number of his experiences, especially relating to hurricanes he experienced while working in Florida.  Steve also shared his pleasure in participating in various charitable community projects.is unable to report on the details.

FUTURE ATTRACTIONS

Aug. 6
Melissa Gardner, Quad City Flames Hockey

Aug. 13
Kiwanis Awards

Quote for the day

“I "knew where it was.  I turned the wrong direction.”

       - Dick Fislar, offered in response to the fact that he was late for the shift he was supposed to have worked over the weekend because he got lost on the way to the Campbell Sports Complex
