June 30, 2008 Meeting

Modern Woodmen Park.jpg (178758 bytes)

President Steve Schroder presided over our June 30 meeting.  In the Absence of Jonathan Turner, Adam Bain led us in the soprano-range version of our national anthem.

Your editor was out of town last week and, for some reason, the version of the newsletter produced by the Substitute Editor got lost somewhere in cyberspace.  Interestingly, I heard nothing about whether the newsletter went out which raises the question in my mind as th whether anyone reads this.

Dick Fislar is still valiantly trying to get responses from Club members on his membership update. If you have not yet submitted your information to Dick, please do so. If you no longer remember, give Dick a call. He’s fun to talk with, anyway.

President Steve reminded us of the annual softball tournament coming up on the second weekend of August. Sign-ups will begin next Monday.

President Steve also briefly reported on the international convention in Orlando and reported on some of the keynote emphasis by our international organization. One major point was that Kiwanis must change. Gee, I seem to recall hearing something about "change" during the primaries.

The Club had the opportunity to present, through President Steve, a $1,000 scholarship for Heidi Huiskamp’s daughter, who will be attending college in North Carolina during the coming year.

In the Fun and Fellowship area, Daryl Townsend won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club. The Kartel won the opportunity to compete for the grand prize, which Gary Miner managed to win for the investors.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

Art Milton stood in for John Califf. Art had accompanied John and a number of other local folks on a trip to India in conjunction with a Northern Illinois Synod trip of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The trip occurred during January of this year. Art focused on a side trip to the Taj Mahal after presenting a number of fascinating facts on this enormous country struggling between technological advances and merging out of poverty.

FUTURE ATTRACTIONS

July 7 Jack Carey,
former QC radio personality

July 14 Dale Whiteside, storyteller/folk musician

July 21 Darren Good,
Insects of Mississippi River Region

QUOTE FOR THE DAY
