Rock Island Kiwanis Club

November 6, 2007
Meeting

OPENING ACT
President
Steve Schroder called the meeting to order, immediately after which Daryl Empen led us in
a rousing, contemporary Kiwanis song from the years of the Hoover administration.
The first announcement came from John Califf
concerning Interclubs. He reminded us that the next Interclub will be at Kewanee at noon
on November 21 where the highlight will be the presentation of the Traveling Gavel. John
is in the process of negotiating transportation through Goods Furniture. If you are into
heavy lifting, keep this one in mind.
The next announcement came from Dave Umphrey, who
drew our attention to a fundraiser for Bethany at Quad City Music Guild on December 2.
Tom Plechaty followed this up with the cheesy
fundraiser he is working on.
The assembled membership was saddened to hear of
the deaths of longtime, beloved member, Dr. John Souders, and Milt Hedquists wife.
Condolences were extended to the families.
We were fortunate to have a number of guests,
including a prospective member brought by Liz; Chris Carmack, our webmaster and unofficial
Club photographer; and the leader of our Kiwanis All Star Chipmunks tribute band, Jonathan
Turner. The Club also entertained representatives of the Alleman High School Key Club,
Rock Island High School Key Club joined by faculty member Sheila Gussey, and Builders Club
from Washington Junior High School.
Happy Dollars included well-deserved kudos for
our own Baron of Bisquick, Adam Bain, and the rest of the committee chairs on our most
recent reincarnation of Pancake Day. We also celebrated quick and successful recoveries by
Daryl Townsend and Mark Amacher. Dick Timmer shared a portion of his winnings as the grand
prize winner in the Rock Island/Milan Booster Club drawing this past weekend. Dick also
shared with the Club some of his expertise on, shall we say, "asset management and
allocation".
In our Fun and Fraud segment, the Kartel only
required $6 to win the $5 preliminary prize. Char Dahl again won the right to play for the
grand prize but lost on the roll of Mike Bells fuzzy dice.
THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

The
program featured Megan Bush from the Student Food Drive. Megan shared some statistical
data with the Club and also went through a brief history of the 21 years of the program.
Facts included on a handout included the fact that food collected goes to River Bend Food
Bank in Moline for distribution to approximately 120 food pantries, soup kitchens,
shelters, day care centers, and rehabilitation centers in Rock Island, Clinton, Scott,
Muscatine and Henry Counties. She also explained that a bit less than 25 percent of the
4.4 million pounds of food distributed by River Bend Food Bank during 2006 came from the
Drive, which is run by 24 participating high schools in the greater Quad Cities area. This
presentation was followed by a brief presentation from representatives from the two high
school Key Clubs in attendance, explaining the various programs and activities in which
these Clubs have engaged.
FUTURE ATTRACTIONS
Nov. 12 Grey Giovanine, Augustana College
mens basketball coach
Nov. 19 Thom Sigel, Rock Island High School boys basketball coach
Nov. 26 Steve Smithers, Alleman High School boys basketball coach
