April 23, 2007 Meeting

OPENING ACT

A big thank-you to Brother Bob Stecker for filling in for me last week when I was out of town. I read my copy of the Kronicle when I returned, and it looks like Bob adopted the same somber approach I have taken.

Our surprise song leader of the week was Daryl Empen whom President Dick Fislar has apparently identified as the only Club member within reach of the podium who can sing halfway decently when Jonathan Turner and the Kiwanis Big Band Cha-Cha Monkeys aren’t available.

Liz gave us another reminder about the NAMI walk.

In Denise Ormsby’s absence, Tom Plechaty reminded us that Rose Day is/was April 25, so if there are any of us left who still need to score some points, head on down to Zimmerman’s and watch our Kiwanis colleagues sell roses and detail used cars under the tutelage of Obermeister Bob Tapprich.

John Califf reported that a delightful time was had by all in Aledo. Apparently, there was another Interclub besides ours in attendance, so the strangers may have outnumbered the Green Dragons. John also reminded us of an Interclub opportunity on May 16 at the Golden K. This is Whitey’s home club, and I’m sure he will be doing his best to make all attendees welcome, so bring your medications and a nap blanket and make it an afternoon. Finally, John reported that we will be hearing more about the June interplanetary Kiwanis rolle bolle competition in Atkinson.

President Dick thought that the division Kiwanis golf tournament might be July 9, but then, again, it might not. Follow your Kronicle for the live, local, late-breaking, fair and balanced news updates on point.

Gene Smith is still in his gentle period in reminding us about Birdies for Charity. We all remember how aggressive he gets as time approaches for the tournament, so if you want Gene to play nice, humor him with a pledge. Besides that, it’s good for the Club.

A sympathy card went out to Craig Knobloch’s family on the occasion of his mother’s death.

Happy/Sad Dollars represented everything from the trivial to insane that happened to our Club members during the past week.

In Fun and Fellowship, one of the many tickets Dick Fislar put in the basket came up in the preliminary drawing, but he wisely donated this mighty sum back to the Club. It was Paul Lamoureux’s turn to qualify for the grand prize which, of course, he didn’t get.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

Club member Heath Treharne introduced Jim and Rhonda Tomasi, who graced us with a moving and inspiring presentation on the trials this couple had endured due to Jim’s upper cervical brain stem problems.

Special Note

Kermit Schroder was a very special person in many ways, but chief among them must be how his enthusiasm for Kiwanis and active membership literally crossed generational boundaries. I am in awe when I look at our membership roster and see that Kermit served as President of our Club in 1951, before some of our current members were born, when some of us were either infants or in grade school, and pre-dating the years of service by other past Presidents whom few current Club members can even remember. Perhaps our best tribute to Kermit would be to reaffirm our commitment to the Club, "When Kiwanis calls."
