April 2, 2007 Meeting

OPENING ACT

President Dick Fislar found his way back from the Caribbean and conducted the meeting. He called on Daryl Empen to serve as song leader.

Dick emphasized that next week’s meeting will not be at the Botanical Center. Rather, it will be at the Modern Woodmen printing building according to Craig Knobloch. The location is 2015 Second Avenue and the building is situated next to the Girl Scouts building.

John Califf greeted us after his trip to Austria to refill the brandy barrels hanging around the necks of the St. Bernards he ran across in the Austrian Alps. He reminded us of the next Interclub scheduled for April 19 with the Golden K Club at Friendship Manor.

We were also reminded of our annual Rock Island downtown clean-up party scheduled for May 19 at 8:00 a.m. President Dick gushed about the interesting things he’s found during the clean-ups, so I would imagine that anything we find "interesting" can be dumped in the back of Dick’s car for further examination.

Don’t forget about the Administrative Professionals Week luncheon sponsored by Bethany on Friday, April 20 at Circa 21.

Liz Berridge reported that the bowling tournament netted $1,213.60 for the Club. She also gave us another weekly announcement about the NAMI walk on May 5 at 9:00 a.m.

Denise Ormsby gave us our weekly reminder of Rose Day. Money should be turned in by April 11 and roses will be available for pickup on April 25.

Guests included representatives of the Alleman High School Key Club.

In our Fun and Fraud segment, Adam Bain graciously donated the preliminary prize to the Club. Rod Jennings kept playing for just a little bit more in the grand prize and managed to succumb to Mike Bell’s wiles.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

TThe program was given by Mike Thoms, Director of Renaissance Rock Island. Mike discussed the function of Renaissance Rock Island and its position as an umbrella organization to DARI, which deals primarily in the commercial end of downtown real estate; RIEGC, which deals primarily with residential real estate; the District, which addresses the entertainment segment in the downtown area; and Youth Build, a work/study project run in cooperation with Rock Island School District No. 41. Mike explained that while there is still much more to do, there has been significant improvement, as can easily be seen by anyone passing through the Rock Island downtown area. Mike also provided us with copies of the District entertainment schedule with the next coming events being the Gallery Hop Friday, May 4, and the Quad Cities Criterium Memorial Day, Monday, May

Special Note

Kermit Schroder was a very special person in many ways, but chief among them must be how his enthusiasm for Kiwanis and active membership literally crossed generational boundaries. I am in awe when I look at our membership roster and see that Kermit served as President of our Club in 1951, before some of our current members were born, when some of us were either infants or in grade school, and pre-dating the years of service by other past Presidents whom few current Club members can even remember. Perhaps our best tribute to Kermit would be to reaffirm our commitment to the Club, "When Kiwanis calls."
