April 9, 2007 Meeting

OPENING ACT

President Dick Fislar called the meeting to order at the Modern Woodmen printing and shipping building. The meeting opened silently since, as Dick explained, with the gavel and bell missing, he was totally gong-less.

Continuing with this momentum, since we were piano-less and Turner-less, President Dick made an executive decision to go song-less.

John Califf gave us an update on Interclubs. The Interclub with the Golden K Club of Rock Island, originally scheduled for April 19, is postponed and in its place on the same date, there will be an Interclub in Aledo.

By the time you read this newsletter, you will have missed the opportunity to join the Board for a festive Board meeting at Huckleberry’s on April 10.

With the snow flurries and below-freezing temperatures we’ve had, it might seem premature, but it is Birdie time and Gene Smith will apply his relentless, persuasive powers on behalf on this Club fundraiser. Support Birdies for Charity.

Next week, your Editor will be out of town for a conference and that wise old sage, Bob Stecker, will be taking over the newsletter duties. Please be gentle.

Denise Ormsby reminded us that Rose Day is April 25 and money is to be turned in by April 11.

We had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny who mysteriously looked like he had waded into the same gene pool as Rod Jennings. A post-Easter gift was presented to renowned Club President and noted Cardinal fan, Dick Fislar.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won its preliminary prize and Mike Swartz lost the grand prize which featured a step back into history with that great crowd-pleaser, "Guess what number I’m thinking of now," game.

THE FEATURE ATTRACTION

Craig Knobloch introduced the program leader, Ron Scharer, Manager of the Modern Woodmen printing and shipping building. He gave a few brief facts about the operation which preceded short tours of the facility given to the Club members.

Special Note

Kermit Schroder was a very special person in many ways, but chief among them must be how his enthusiasm for Kiwanis and active membership literally crossed generational boundaries. I am in awe when I look at our membership roster and see that Kermit served as President of our Club in 1951, before some of our current members were born, when some of us were either infants or in grade school, and pre-dating the years of service by other past Presidents whom few current Club members can even remember. Perhaps our best tribute to Kermit would be to reaffirm our commitment to the Club, "When Kiwanis calls."
