Rock Island Kiwanis Club Kiwanews Kronicle February 2/26/07 Meeting
OPENING ACT Steve Schroder once again ably stood in for Dick Fislar, who was apparently enjoying the hospitality at Quad City International Airport. Jim Horstmann made a game attempt at raising the Clubs energy level with an enthusiastic songleading stint. At least Jim was backed up by Jonathan Turner and the Rock Island Kiwanis Orchestra.John Califf reported on the All Lutheran Interclub last week and promised to knock our socks off with an announcement next week on the next scheduled Interclub. Gene Smith reported on the scheduled Kiwanis Night with the Mallards this past Saturday. Considering how well we did on ticket sales for a game that was postponed, just think how we could do if they actually played. Liz made another feverish effort at soliciting pledges for the March 11 District bowling event. Guests included Interclub visits by the East Moline/Silvis Club and the Bettendorf Club. Representatives also came from the Rock Island Key Club and this time, they were accompanied by Rock Island High School Principal, Nate Anderson, and were introduced by our own Kay Ingham. Our Happy/Sad Dollars segment featured, as might be expected, a load of weather stories. The most entertaining stories came from Mike Bell and Dale Grabau, who is also featured later in this newsletter. In our Fun and Fraud segment, the Kartel not only elected distribution of the $6 preliminary prize in consideration for its $8 worth of tickets but also managed to lose out on the grand prize. THE FEATURE ATTRACTION The program was given by Carol Murphy, Director of Operations with Boys and Girls Clubs, who graciously gave an excellent and informative substitute presentation. The B&GC currently has three sites, two in Davenport and one in Moline. Approximately 100 youngsters attend each site on any given day. A featured focus of the Clubs program is tutoring between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00. The cost to kids is nominal, only $12 per year, with the balance of the Clubs expenses financed largely by United Way and then other community donors. As many as 200 youth are served at the Saturday night gatherings at the Floreciente site. Carol mentioned that the biggest challenge to the Club is the resurgence of gangs in the area and their recruiting efforts. FUTURE ATTRACTIONS March 5 - Alleman and Rocky Key Clubs March 12 - Deanna Solis March 19 Jennifer Franklin Quote For The Day "She really does have some interesting things to say." - Dale Grabau, referring to his charming, patient and long-suffering wife when the power kept his television off for the weekend Kiwanews Archive |
